Chelsea striker Timo Werner has assured fans that he will be fit to play against defending champions Liverpool on Sunday despite picking up a slight injury in his side's 3-1 win over Brighton.

The 24-year-old German star made his debut, along with compatriot Kai Havertz, in Chelsea's opening Premier League game on Monday and instantly impressed as he won a first-half penalty when he was hauled down by Brighton keeper Mat Ryan. Jorginho stepped up to help Frank Lampard's side break the deadlock.

The new signing had ice strapped to his leg at full-time following the collision with Ryan, but he told Sky Sports that there was no need to worry about his injury.

"The knee of the goalkeeper hit me directly in the muscle and it went very hard. The rest of the game it hurt a lot. I couldn't do some movements because the muscle went very hard, but at the end I'm happy that we won," he said.

"I don't care about this. In one week it will be good. We did a good game today, we did well, and I'm happy I won the penalty because it was important for our game," he added.

Chelsea were forced to work hard for their win as Brighton caused a lot of problems for the new-look side. They equalized after 54 minutes when Trossard's shot slipped under Kepa's attempted save. Chelsea regained their lead two minutes later when Reece James fired a stunning pile-driver and Kurt Zouma sealed the game with a deflected volley.

"The game is totally different. There is more space but you come out in the second half and the game was totally different. Brighton gave us a lot of problems," Werner said. "I played against three massive defenders, you don't have that in Germany. Happy to be here and I think it was a good first game for me and the team."

"The second game will become harder because it is Liverpool. I tried and did my best and got an assist for the team. We had a lot of players not in the rhythm now but I think we will get better and better when we play more games together," he concluded.

Lampard was quite pleased with Werner's performance. "Timo's speed to win the penalty showed he is sharp and he was a threat all night. He is very mobile and I liked his performance," he said. "With Kai we saw a lot as well. To get these minutes will only be good and both of them will be huge players for this club."

Meanwhile, in France, Neymar said on social media that he "acted like a fool" as he was the last of five red cards in Sunday's Ligue 1 clash, sent off for hitting Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez.

"Yesterday I revolted. I was punished with red because I wanted to hit someone who offended me," Neymar wrote on Instagram. "I thought I could not leave without doing something because I realized that those in charge would not do anything, did not notice or ignored the fact.

"In our sport, aggressions, insults, swearing are part of the game, of the dispute. You can't be affectionate. I understand this guy partly, all is part of the game, but racism and intolerance are unacceptable.

"I accept my punishment because I should have followed the path of clean football. I hope, on the other hand, that the offender will also be punished... The guy was a fool. I also acted like a fool for letting me get involved in that."

Later, Marseille issued a statement of their own defending Gonzalez, who accused Neymar of being a bad loser.

"Alvaro Gonzalez is not racist. He has shown us that by his daily behavior since joining the club, as his teammates have already testified," read the statement.

The club warned of the "serious consequences" of the private telephone numbers of Gonzalez and his relatives being released on Brazilian media and social networks, which had led to "constant harassment, consisting in particular of death threats."

PSG also issued a statement, saying they "look forward to [French governing body] the LFP's disciplinary commission investigating and ascertaining the facts."
