Senior UN official hails China's contributions to world peace, poverty reduction

Updated 2020.10.08 08:44 GMT+8

A United Nations senior official has said China has made great contributions to world peace and stability, especially in peacekeeping and poverty reduction.

In a recent interview, Fabrizio Hochschild Drummond, special adviser to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, noted that China is the second largest financial contributor to UN peacekeeping operations and the largest troop-contributing country among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

"China has shown a very important commitment to peacekeeping," he said.

As the world's largest developing country, China pays 15 percent of the UN peacekeeping budget and 12 percent of the UN regular budget, making it the second largest contributor following the United States.

Currently, China has over 2,500 peacekeepers serving in UN peacekeeping missions, more than any other permanent member of the Security Council.

Hochschild also highlighted China's achievements in poverty reduction.

"China's own national success in reducing poverty accounts for a very large part of the global poverty reduction over the past decades," he said.

"I think there's much that can be learned from what was achieved by China," he added. "And I think many other countries are trying to learn."

In the past seven decades, China has managed to lift 850 million people out of poverty, which accounts for more than 70 percent of global poverty alleviation. At the end of 2019, the number of impoverished people in China's rural areas fell to 5.51 million from 98.99 million in 2012.

Furthermore, China is on course to eradicate extreme poverty across the country by 2020, which will make the country the first in the world to end absolute poverty.

Hochschild, a Chilean national, served as assistant secretary-general for strategic coordination in the executive office of the UN chief from 2017 to 2019.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN. The organization will convene a high level meeting of the General Assembly to commemorate the anniversary on Monday with the participation of heads of state and government.
