COVID-19 has triggered the deepest global recession since World War II. The World Bank estimates the global economy will shrink by 5.2 percent this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, some of the most well-known businesses started during economic recessions. Unicorns like Airbnb and Uber were founded during the 2008 global financial crisis, and Alibaba's Taobao was launched during the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak.
