Live updates: Global COVID-19 cases top 63 million

Confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide have exceeded 63.1 million, with over 1.4 million fatalities and more than 40 million recoveries, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University.

The Chinese mainland on Monday recorded 12 new cases of COVID-19, four locally transmitted cases in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and eight from overseas.

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said it is tightening restriction measures to rein in COVID-19 spread starting Wednesday.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has topped 13.5 million, with over 267,000 deaths recorded nationwide. Infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci warned of "a surge upon a surge" in cases in the coming weeks after Thanksgiving.

Dr. Scott Atlas, Trump's special adviser on the coronavirus, has resigned. 

Moderna said it would file requests for emergency authorization of its vaccine in the U.S. and Europe on Monday, after full results confirmed high efficacy estimated at 94.1 percent.
