Among 17 deer species in China, the Hainan Eld's deer is one of the rarest. The population of the Hainan Eld's deer once plunged to 26 on the edge of extinction. After four decades of conservation and protection, they have seen an increase in population. Currently, the Hainan Eld's deer is under first-class state protection in China. They live no higher than 200 meters above sea level, in the low hills and on the plains and mate in spring and summer. They eat a variety of grasses, herbaceous plants, and shoots.
Here are some photos of the beautiful Hainan Eld's deer by CGTN Nature filming crew in Hainan Province, the southernmost island province of China.
