Hong Kong officials on Wednesday morning lifted an 11-hour "lockdown" on two streets in Yau Ma Tei after around 330 residents there were tested for COVID-19 and one confirmed case was found.

The "restriction-testing declaration" was announced for the two streets in Yau Ma Tei – Pitt Street and Tung On Street – at 7 p.m. on Tuesday with people required to undergo compulsory virus testing.

The government said the confirmed case has been hospitalized and a relevant close contact has been transferred to the quarantine center.

The Chinese financial hub has turned to "ambush-style" lockdowns, closing off areas where coronavirus cases have spiked and testing people inside. 

Last Saturday, the city imposed its first lockdown in a section of the Jordan neighborhood in Kowloon after cases spiked there.

The testing finished on Monday and total of 13 cases were detected after compulsory testing of all residents.

Carrie Lam, chief executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, on Wednesday hailed the overnight move in Yau Ma Tei, saying in a Facebook post that it had achieved the goals of "being confidential," "focusing on an area" and "compressing the lockdown time."
