A panel of World Health Organization (WHO) scientists arrived in central China's Wuhan City on January 14 for a coronavirus tracing mission with help from Chinese experts.
Soon after a 14-day quarantine, the WHO experts started to engage in discussions and data analysis on the mission with their Chinese peers. The field trips are not open to the media to avoid distractions. However, media representatives are free to take pictures around the locations.
Here's a glimpse of their schedule:
February 4: The China-WHO joint team in Wuhan held talks with recovered COVID-19 patients, bereaved families affected by the virus, community workers and other residents. The experts learned about how those infected with the virus were treated and recovered, as well as the daily lives of people in Wuhan during and after the outbreak.
February 3: WHO experts went to Wuhan Institute of Virology, where they visited a national laboratory with the highest biosafety level (P4). They exchanged ideas with the institute's experts on their daily work, international scientific cooperation as well as anti-epidemic efforts.
The P4 laboratory in Wuhan is joining the WHO's Reference Laboratory Network, which was established to boost cooperation on global public health. The WHO experts praised the move.
February 2: The team visited veterinary laboratories at Hubei Provincial Center for Animal Disease Control and Prevention, and discussed with local experts.
February 1: The China-WHO joint team visited the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Wuhan, and talked with local experts. They also went to a level-three biosafety laboratory and a flu reference lab to check samples and research data of initial COVID-19 cases.
January 31: The team visited Huanan seafood market. They conducted workshops with market staff, vendors, residents and media representatives.
January 29-30: The experts visited an exhibition dedicated to China's battle against the COVID-19 epidemic that recounts the nationwide efforts made by frontline medics and many others.
They visited Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine and Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, the primary battlegrounds for treating patients in the early days of the coronavirus outbreak. They also talked at length with the management staff and medical workers at the hospitals as well as recovered patients.
Peter Daszak, a member of the WHO team and president of the EcoHealth Alliance, described the mission a significant opportunity to communicate with frontline medics who fought against the coronavirus at the critical moment.
The WHO experts also spoke with heroes in China's fight against COVID-19, such as Zhang Dingyu and Zhang Jixian, expressing their admiration and taking photos with them.
January 14: The team arrived in Wuhan and began a 14-day quarantine in line with China's pandemic prevention and control measures before conducting fieldwork. The WHO and China agreed the team could start field trips immediately after the quarantine instead of undergoing further indoor medical observation, but the whole crew needed to work together under a closed-loop management system. The WHO arranged local hotels and transportation for the team.
