China has always adhered to the strategy of "targeted" or "precise" poverty alleviation as well as eradicating poverty by means of development, said Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday at an event marking China's accomplishments in extreme poverty eradication.

"We've always emphasized that the work of poverty alleviation relies on 'precision,'" said Xi, highlighting that China has been implementing the strategy through precise management of both the impoverished population as well as the resources allocated to them.

He said that a national information system was set up to ensure that the poverty alleviation resources were aptly directed at the target population, and policies were released with measures tailored to different cases in terms of location, population, causes and forms.

Poverty alleviation should be meticulous, like doing embroidery, and the work should be done to the root, said Xi.

"We adhered to the strategy of development-oriented poverty eradication, taking development as the fundamental path to poverty eradication and prosperity," said Xi.

The strategy helped stimulate people's productivity in poverty-stricken areas, thereby alleviating poverty by "making blood" as opposed to "blood transfusion."

Education has also been taken as one of the measures to get rid of poverty.

Education should not be affected by poverty, and each child should have access to it, said Xi, emphasizing that efforts should be made to "cut off the intergenerational transmission of poverty."

Xi said precise poverty eradication has been proven to be a winning strategy and development is a path to shake off poverty with distinctive Chinese characteristics.
