Li Zhanshu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC), said Monday that the country's top legislature will resolutely safeguard China's sovereignty, making sure the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong" is implemented.

He said that the committee will work to ensure constitutional order and the rule of law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), maintaining long-term prosperity and stability of the HKSAR.

"The NPC will stand firm in safeguarding China's sovereignty, security, and development interests in accordance with the law," Li said in the work report of the Standing Committee during the second plenary meeting of the fourth session of the 13th NPC.

A draft decision on improving the electoral system of the HKSAR was submitted on Friday to the NPC for deliberation.
