The spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations (UN) on Monday expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to a side event being organized by the United States, Britain, Germany and a few non-governmental organizations in New York on the human rights situation in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The spokesperson urged the co-sponsors to cancel the event which interferes in China's internal affairs and called on other UN member states to boycott the event.

"The three countries and other co-sponsors, out of anti-China political motivation, are using human rights issues as a political tool in a vain attempt to create division and turbulence in Xinjiang, interfering in China's internal affairs and disrupting China's peaceful development," said the spokesperson.

According to the spokesperson, the so-called Xinjiang-related issues are lies fabricated by the U.S. and its co-sponsors.

Xinjiang is presently at its historical best given stability, rapid economic development and harmonious co-existence of people from all ethnic groups, the spokesperson said, adding all plots to contain and destabilize China are strongly resented by all ethnic groups in Xinjiang, including the Uygur population, and are doomed to fail.

The spokesperson condemned co-sponsors of "turning a deaf ear" to the strong call of international solidarity while politicizing human rights, provoking political confrontation and undermining the unity and collaboration of member states.

Such practices gravely violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and norms of international relations, severely undermine the efforts of member states in addressing global challenges and poison cooperation in human rights and other areas, said the spokesperson.

Over the past six decades, Xinjiang's economy has grown by more than 200 times, its per capita GDP increased by nearly 40 times and residents' life expectancy expanded from 30 to 72 years. The Uygur population in Xinjiang has increased from 5.55 million to 12.8 million in the past four decades.

Stressing that China's achievements in protecting human rights are known to all, the spokesperson also suggested the U.S. and other co-sponsors to "reflect on their poor treatment of minorities in their own countries."

The spokesperson went further by revealing the U.S.'s bad records of human rights abuse. "It is the United States and its followers that have killed the largest number of Muslims in the world."

The spokesperson was referring to the U.S. killing of Muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. According to him, the wars and military actions started by the U.S. in the name of counter-terrorism had caused over 800,000 casualties, most of whom were civilian, and displacement of tens of millions of people.

"The United States does not care about the death of nearly 1 million Muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, but is 'very keen' on Uygur Muslims in China's Xinjiang who are living peaceful and happy lives. The U.S.'s hypocrisy and ulterior motives are crystal clear," said the spokesperson.

"Justice shall prevail. China trusts the member states will see through this political scheme by the United States and other co-sponsors, and choose to reject it," said the spokesperson, adding that the U.S. will only end up "shooting itself in the foot and damaging its own image and reputation."
