China's top economic planner on Tuesday urged Australia to stop harming bilateral trade and investment cooperation and take actions for healthy developments between the two countries.

The words came after the suspension of all activities under the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue on May 6, following Australia's canceling of two cooperation deals between its state of Victoria and China under the Belt and Road Initiative last month.

"We have had to make proper and necessary responses," said Jin Xiandong, spokesperson of China's National Development and Reform Commission, adding "the Australian government should take full responsibility of the suspension."

Bilateral relations between the two countries have soured since last year when Australia imposed anti-dumping duties on some Chinese products and multiple incidents of discrimination against Chinese students were reported in Australia.

Launched in 2014, the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue serves as a crucial part to consolidate bilateral relations. The two sides had been using the dialogue to strengthen economic ties by conducting strategic dialogues on key areas of the economy and investment.
