Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday stressed the importance of multilateralism in promoting stability to world order in a meeting with the G20 foreign ministers.

Multilateralism was the key word repeated at Tuesday's meeting as the foreign ministers called on all parties to cooperate on trade and commit to boost the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We should adhere to win-win cooperation and oppose zero-sum games," Wang said via video link, observing that multilateralism shouldn't be used just as slogan while some nations continue to promote unilateralism.

"We need to ensure and stabilize the global production and supply chains… and avoid the fragmentation of the international market, the politicization of cooperation mechanisms, and ideology in rules and standards. We need to promote structural reform to achieve a recovery of high-quality and resilience," Wang added.

He also called for an open and inclusive environment within the group, while calling for further opening-up and more integrated efforts to bounce back from the looming COVID-19 financial crisis.

A responsible macro-economic policy should be adopted in making sure the negative effects coming from one's internal measures won't "spill out" to the world, Wang pointed out, doubling down his hope to safeguard the normal operation of a global economic and financial system.

The pandemic has hammered the global economy with the worst recession since the 1930s, according to the IMF. According to a report released last year by the Asian Development Bank, the global economy could suffer between $5.8 trillion and $8.8 trillion in losses.

Speaking of China's role, Wang said that the country has provided more than 450 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to nearly 100 countries. He called for stronger cooperation in COVID-19 vaccines, treatment and contain measures in the bloc.

The Chinese diplomat also touched on sustainable development, specifically climate change. The principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" should be carried out in the cooperative process of climate change, he said.

During the meeting, foreign ministers of the G20 members agreed upon their leading role in the world's economic recovery process. The ministers said they stand firmly for the objective distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and will jointly safeguard the safety of people's public health.
