Since the implementation of the national security law a year ago, Hong Kong's society has returned to the right track, with national security safeguarded, rule of law practiced and justice served, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin on Wednesday.

"Various legitimate rights and freedoms of the vast Hong Kong residents and foreigners living in Hong Kong have been better guaranteed in a safer environment, which is an objective fact that has been recognized by everyone without prejudice," said Wang.

He made the remarks at a daily media briefing in response to a question on Amnesty International's "human rights emergency" comment on the law. He called the organization's claim a "malicious smear and distortion of facts."

Chinese lawmakers voted unanimously to pass the Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on June 30, 2020.

Data shows that capital inflows into the HKSAR were as high as $50 billion last year, funds raised through initial public offerings (IPOs) ranked second globally, and the GDP grew by 7.9 percent year on year in the first quarter of this year, said Wang.

The International Monetary Fund reaffirmed in a recent report the city's status as a global financial hub, while the number of international media outlets and journalists in the HKSAR witnessed an increase, he added.

All these facts speak volumes of the confidence in the national security law and the HKSAR's prospects, Wang said.

Any attempt to attack or slander the national security law will fail to stop the HKSAR from good governance and prosperity, he stressed.

"The Chinese government is determined to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests, implement the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy, and object to foreign interference in Hong Kong affairs."
