A big day awaits Israelis next week. They are about to witness the handover of the presidency from Reuven Rivlin to Isaac Herzog after the former's seven-year term.

The day also marks the 84th anniversary of the Lugou Bridge Incident, a key event that marks the beginning of Japan's full-scale war against China during World War II. Official data shows that more than 35 million Chinese servicemen and civilians died during the war, accounting for nearly eight percent of China's total population in 1928.

84th Anniversary of Lugou Bridge Incident

On July 7, 1937, Japanese troops invaded Beijing, attacking Chinese forces at Lugou Bridge, also known as Marco Polo Bridge, at Beijing's suburb. Lugou Bridge Incident marked the beginning of Japan's full-scale war against China during World War II.

The commemoration of the incident is etched deeply especially among people of northeast China as their homeland was occupied by Japanese army during World War II.

A series of commemorating activities are expected to be held across China.

Isaac Herzog to be sworn in as Israeli president

Israel's new President, Isaac Herzog, will be sworn in on July 7, according to the president's office.

In his first televised address after being elected, Herzog said he intends "to build bridges" within the Israeli divided society and with the Jewish diaspora and "to keep safe the foundations of our democracy."

The role of the president in Israel is mainly ceremonial, with little executive power. The person who owned the most power, the country's prime minister, has switched recently, too. Naftali Bennett succeeded the country's longest-serving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will leave the country's official prime minister's residence no later than July 10.
