Tokyo 2020 highlights on July 29: Chinese athletes claim golds in swimming and table tennis

Team China claimed three gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics on July 29 in two swimming events and the women's table tennis final. 

Zhang Yufei won the women's 200-meter butterfly; Yang Junxuan, Zhang Yufei, Li Bingjie and Tang Muhan won the women's 200-meter freestyle relay; and Chen Meng claimed gold in table tennis.  

Also on Thursday, Team China secured two gold medals for events set to take place on Friday, as the men's table tennis singles final and badminton mixed doubles final will be staged within the Chinese squad. Fan Zhendong will take on Ma Long, while Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong will play against Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping.

Here's a brief review of the gold medals from the Chinese delegation on Thursday.

Zhang Yufei, 23, broke the Olympic record in the women's 200-meter butterfly final with a time of 2:03.86, ahead of Team USA's Regan Smith (2:05.30) and Hali Flickinger (2:05.65), who finished second and third respectively.

The victory was Team China's first gold in the pool during the Tokyo Olympics and the second medal for Zhang, who clinched the silver medal in the women's 100-meter butterfly final on July 26.

Shortly after, Chinese swimmers stunned the world again by winning the gold medal in the women's 200-meter freestyle relay final.

Yang Junxuan, Zhang Yufei, Li Bingjie and Tang Muhan touched in 7:40.33 to smash both the world record and the Olympic record, ahead of Team USA (7:40.73) and Team Australia (7:41.29).

In the evening, Chen Meng defeated teammate Sun Yingsha 4-2 in the women's table tennis singles final, as Chinese paddlers once again took the top spots on the Olympic podium.
