China's 2021 box office revenue surpassed 40 billion yuan ($6.2 billion) as of Sunday, with the total number of movie viewers reaching 988 million, data from the country's movie ticketing platform Maoyan showed.
Chinese comedies "Hi, Mom" and "Detective Chinatown 3," which were both released during the Chinese New Year holiday, lead the way with respective earnings of 5.4 billion yuan and 4.5 billion yuan.
The historical epic "The Battle at Lake Changjin" follows close behind. Released ahead of the National Day holiday (October 1-7), it has so far garnered 4.1 billion yuan in box office revenue.

Eight of the top 10 earners at China's box office this year are domestic productions. The only foreign films on the chart are U.S. productions "F9: The Fast Saga" and "Godzilla vs. Kong," respectively ranking fourth and seventh with 1.39 billion yuan and 1.23 billion yuan.
"Raging Fire," a domestic action film helmed by late Hong Kong director Benny Chan, is currently the fifth highest earner this year with cumulative revenue of over 1.32 billion yuan.
