Team Canada claimed the gold medal in the short track speed skating men's 5,000m relay in 6:41.257 at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics on Wednesday.

South Korea finished second, while the Italian squad took bronze. 

China finished fifth in the group in 6:51.654, about eight seconds behind the fourth-placed Russian Olympic Committee, following a mishap toward the end of the race when Sun Long crashed into the wall.  

At the age of 37, five-time Olympian Charles Hamelin from Canada became the oldest short track skater to be crowned in the Olympics. 

Shortly after in the women's 1,500m final, South Korea's Choi Minjeong defended her title, taking gold in 2:17.789, after setting the Olympic record in the semifinal round at 2:16.831. She is also the current world record holder (2:14.354) in this event.

Five-time Olympian Arianna Fontana from Italy took silver in 2:17.862, followed by Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands in 2:17.865.

This was the 11th Olympic medal overall for the legendary Italian skater, and her third personal medal in Beijing. She took silver in the mixed team relay event and won gold in the women's 500m, which solidified her spot as one of the greatest skaters in history with the most medals in Olympic short track events.

Team China have so far bagged a total of four medals in short track events at Beijing 2022, including two golds, one silver and one bronze in the short track speed skating mixed team relay, men's 1,000m and women's 3,000m relay, respectively.
