The Yangtze is one of the Chinese nation's mother rivers and has nurtured its rich and colorful history. Chen Xianming, 53-year-old former fisherman, and his family have fished the Yangtze as a way of life for generations. On January 1, 2021, a 10-year fishing ban was imposed, requiring Chen and other fishermen in his village to cease fishing. To contribute to the river's conservation, he signed up as a guardian of the Yangtze. Since the ban was imposed, Chen has witnessed the recovery of the river's fish stocks. Even Yangtze finless porpoises, unseen for many years, have reappeared.
