The Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States fired four surface-to-surface missiles at mock targets into the Sea of Japan, a day after the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s ballistic missile launch over Japan, Yonhap News Agency reported on Wednesday, citing the ROK's military.
The launches were in response to the DPRK firing a ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in five years on Tuesday, the ROK's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, adding that the ROK and the United States each fired two Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles.
The ROK's President Yoon Suk-yeol called the DPRK's launch a "provocation" and warned of a "resolute" response.
On Tuesday afternoon, the ROK and U.S. warplanes conducted bombing drills, protesting the DPRK's missile firing.
Japan also announced later that it carried out a joint drill with U.S. military planes in airspace west of the country's Kyushu region.
United Nations chief Antonio Guterres condemned the DPRK's latest test as "clearly an escalation." Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida decried it "in the strongest terms."
