Wild wingfruit elaeagnus trees are only found in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces. Being cold-resistant and drought-enduring, their well-developed root system can preserve water and soil. Their fruit is also a rare material for oil extraction.
Already in his 60s, Zhang Lianshui still goes into the mountains to find wild wingfruit elaeagnus trees and collect their seeds. These tiny seeds are crucial to his planting base that covers an area of nearly 6,700 hectares in Xiangning County, north China's Shanxi Province. Zhang and the farmers who work together with him in the field believe that the trees can help them live a prosperous life.
