Reporter's note: This is the fourth episode of our special series "Millennials on the Rise," where CGTN speaks to some of the youngest delegates to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). They are grassroots Party members from all walks of life, ranging from the deputy chief of a Guizhou township to the head of an emergency rescue unit.

Qimangul Anwar is not the typical military personnel people would portray.

She laughs whenever she can. "I am more the friendly kind," she told CGTN, smiling with her eyes crinkled.

A third generation soldier, the 34-year-old said she took on the legacy from her grandfather who was among the first ethnic Uygur soldiers after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

"My memories of him were formed when I was 5 or 6 years old, when he was 60 and had retired. He would still follow the protocols of a soldier, waking up when it was still early. Then he would read the newspaper, listen to the news, and take us kids out for exercise, giving us physical training," she said. "He would ask kids not to waste anything, and not to lead a luxurious life. His attitude to life deeply influenced us."

Qimangul now teaches the operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for China's border defense, which according to her, the process from operation, command and maintenance are demanding.

"My aim is to teach as well as I can, and add wings to our country's border defense through technological means," she said. "I hope to contribute my share of efforts in my ordinary job on this new journey."
