Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday said Russia's recent statement on the avoidance of a nuclear war is "rational and responsible."

Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the G20 Summit on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Earlier this month, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it is sticking to a joint declaration issued in January with the other four nuclear-weapon states – China, France, Britain and the United States – to reaffirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.

On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Wang said China will continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace talks in an objective and fair manner.

Lavrov said Russia remains open to negotiation and dialogue.
