Fiji's Social Democratic Liberal Party, which was the kingmaker in the decision to form the next government, have decided to team up with the main opposition People's Alliance Party (PA), the National Federation Party (NFP), FBC News quoted officials as saying on Tuesday.

Anare Jale, the chair of the Negotiations Committee, said it was a "hard" decision to make and it took some major deliberations to come to a conclusion.

The decision marked the end of Frank Bainimarama's 16-year rule of the South Pacific island nation.

The Social Democratic Liberal Party said its executive had voted 16-14 in favor of joining a coalition led by Sitiveni Rabuka, who looks set to be the country's next prime minister.
