Male athletes will be allowed to compete in the team artistic swimming event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, World Aquatics announced on Thursday.

"There are eight competitors in each team. The new rules will permit a maximum of two men to compete in each team at the Olympic Games. Ten teams are expected to compete," read a press release by World Aquatics, the international governing body of aquatic sports.

With the approval from the International Olympic Committee, the decision by World Aquatics has made it possible for men to compete in artistic swimming for the first time since it was first listed as an official sport in the Games in 1984. Men have been allowed to compete in the World Championships since 2015.

Two-time world champion Giorgio Minisini from Italy welcomed the decision, saying the evolution of the sport towards inclusivity is rolling forward fast.

In June 2022, Chinese synchronized swimmer Shi Haoyu and his partner Zhang Yihao won Team China's first-ever mixed artistic swimming medal, a bronze with 86.4425 points in the mixed duet technical event, at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Within a week, the pair won a second bronze medal in Budapest in the mixed duet free event
