Residents of the southern Italian city of Crotone held a vigil on Monday for those who perished after a wooden boat crowded with migrants smashed into the rocky reefs of the Calabrian coast and broke apart. The death toll from the devastating shipwreck off the country's southern coast rose to 64 on Tuesday. Italy has complained bitterly for years that fellow EU countries have balked at taking in migrants, many of whom are aiming to find family or work in northern Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for redoubling efforts to deal with the problem.
