China's Qin Haiyang sets men's 50m breaststroke Asian record

Chinese swimmer Qin Haiyang bettered the men's 50m breaststroke Asian record with 26.63 seconds in the event's preliminary round and went on to win in the final on the last day of the Chinese national spring swimming championships in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province on Friday. 

Earlier, Qin won the men's 100m and 200m breaststroke titles, and in the 50m heats, he was faster than his teammate Yan Zibei, the previous Asian record holder with 26.83 seconds.

"I was qualified enough to set a new record according to recent training results. And I will accept more systematic training in the next few months and hope to improve my performance," Qin said after the race. 

In the other events on Friday, Chen Jun'er finished first in the men's 200m butterfly with 1:54:58 minutes. Pan Zhanle grabbed the men's 400m freestyle gold. Wang Gukailai won the men's 200m backstroke.

Meanwhile, in the women's event, Li Bingjie won big as she bagged a total of six gold medals. She triumphed in the women's 800m freestyle in 8:23:42 minutes on Friday.

Olympic champion Zhang Yufei grabbed her third gold medal at the event as she finished the women's 50m butterfly in 25.32, equalling her own national record. 

"Now I am more confident after recent matches. And I am more aware of my capability. I can swim faster in the next races," Zhang said. 

The national spring swimming championships is the first trial to select athletes for the upcoming World Aquatics Championships in July which will be held in Fukuoka, Japan, and the Hangzhou Asian Games in September.
