A Pakistani court indicted the country's former prime minister Imran Khan on charges of illegally selling state gifts, GEO TV reported on Wednesday, adding that Khan will be remanded in the anti-corruption agency's custody for eight days.

Khan's indictment follows a decision by the Election Commission of Pakistan in October, which found him guilty of illegally selling state gifts between 2018 and 2022 and barred him from holding public office until the next election due in November.

He has denied any wrongdoing and said the charges were politically motivated.

Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha, a lawmaker from Pakistan's ruling coalition who was a plaintiff in the case against Khan on state gifts, confirmed his indictment and said the former premier had put the "country's peace at stake".

Khan was arrested on Tuesday by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) under alleged charges of corruption and corrupt practices.

His supporters clashed with police in many cities on Tuesday and stormed military buildings in Lahore and Rawalpindi.

Pakistani army said on Wednesday that May 9, the day protests erupted after Khan was arrested, "will be remembered as a dark chapter" in the country's history, Al Jazeera reported.

Four people were killed, 27 others wounded in clashes between Khan's supporters and the country's police in Peshawar, local media Geo TV reported on Wednesday.
