Mountain Life Series | Episode 2: Antlers rule
CGTN
05:26

In the dense forest on the northwestern Greater Hinggan Mountains, a reindeer seems restless. It rubs its head against the shrubs. This is the world's southernmost reindeer population. Both genders have antlers. Their reproductive period lasts from early September to late October. Before that, they shed the soft coat of the antlers to expose bony horns. The new antlers are almost straight. The branching begins when they are two or three years old. Upon reaching adulthood, they can have more than 30 branches. The antlers are covered in velvet, a renewable coating, as well as hair and blood vessels. As the breeding season approaches, the blood vessels degenerate. The antlers begin to ossify and gradually shed their coating. They bleed during this process, but it is crucial for their growth.
