Chen Jining, secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, on Thursday pledged to offer a better environment for global businesses during a meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Chen said Shanghai will continue to provide a market-oriented, law-based and internationalized environment for businesses from all over the world.
It will also provide a "long-term, stable, efficient and convenient" service policy for global businesses to develop in the city, said Chen.
Hailing Tesla's growth in Shanghai, he urged the electric carmaker to take opportunities brought about by China's modernization drive, green and low-carbon development, and industrial transformation and upgrading and welcomed it to increase investment and expand operations.
For his part, Musk said he was excited about the success of the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory and talked about low-carbon cooperation and green products.
He voiced his hope to continue to deepen cooperation with Shanghai in various fields to better serve the Chinese and global markets.
Earlier on Thursday, Musk visited the Tesla factory in the city and lauded its production efficiency and quality.
"Throughout the world, the cars we produce here are not just the most efficient reproduction but also the highest quality," he said.
Tesla's Shanghai plant delivered 710,000 vehicles in 2022, an increase of 48 percent from 2021.
Established in 2019, the Tesla Gigafactory in Shanghai is the carmaker's first Gigafactory outside the United States. The U.S. carmaker announced in April that it will build a new mega factory in Shanghai, which will be dedicated to manufacturing the company's energy-storage product Megapack.
