CGTN

As long as it is conductive to easing the situation in Ukraine, China is willing to do anything, the Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs Li Hui said on Tuesday.

Li made his remarks at a news briefing on his six-leg European tour last month. The Chinese envoy Tuesday also held a briefing for foreign diplomatic envoys to China on his 12-day trip, during which he visited Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany, the EU headquarters in Belgium and Russia.

China's efforts recognized

All parties spoke positively of China's efforts to resolve the crisis and generally recognize China's efforts for peace talks, Li noted, adding that these countries all voiced a willingness to continue to communicate with China.

He said the Ukraine side appreciated China's respect for other countries' sovereignty and territorial integrity and praised China for following the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Russia appreciated China's sincere desire and earnest efforts to promote a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine crisis, according Li.

As for the European countries, Li said they hoped China will continue to play a positive role and is willing to work with China for a peaceful result to the issue.

All these once again show that China's position on the Ukraine issue is just, fair and impartial, Li stressed.

He told the press that China did not create the crisis, nor is a party to the conflict. "Rather, China is an advocate of peace and a facilitator of peace talks," he said, adding China will not inflame the situation.

Common concern over spillover effect

Looking back on his trips, Li said he was impressed that all parties are highly concerned about potential spillover effects from the crisis, especially nuclear safety, humanitarian issues and food security.

If a nuclear war happens, no countriy can stay safe on its own, Li pointed out, He urged all sides to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities and take concrete measure to cool down the situation.

According to the Chinese envoy, China is giving a lot of attention to the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and has put forward a six-point proposal. He noted that cooling down the situation is the best for humanitarianism.

For the food security issue, Li said he is glad to see the extension of Black Sea Grain Initiative. As China proposed a cooperation initiative on global food security, he added China is willing to work with all parties to ensure food security.

Neither side shut the door for negotiation

Although the Chinese envoy admitted the risk of escalation remains high and there remain "many difficulties" ahead before Ukraine and Russia can sit down for peace talks, he said he believes neither Ukraine nor Russia have firmly shut the door for peace talks.

"If we really want to stop the war, save lives and achieve peace, we should stop sending weapons to the battlefield," Li said.

On the root cause of the conflict, Li said the Ukraine conflict has a complex history. "But essentially, it is an eruption of the problems built up in the security governance of Europe."

The painful lessons of how the Ukraine crisis developed to its current state merits deep reflection by all parties, he added.

Li also pointed out that it is crucial for someone to come forward to facilitate the building of consensus between all sides.

Taking a question from CGTN on the prospects of bringing both sides to a discussion, Li said China will continue to step up dialogue and build up common understanding.

He said that, as the first delegation sent by China, his trip didn't aim to produce immediate results but was focused on learning the stances of different parties and elaborating on China's stance on the need for peace talks in order to seek common ground.

Li on Friday also suggested Beijing could send another delegation to the region. "This was the first time, but it is not the last time."
