China urges Japan to take the legitimate concerns of the international community and its domestic people seriously, dispose of its nuclear-contaminated water in a science-based, safe and transparent way, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Monday.
Japan should subject itself to rigorous international oversight, Wang said, noting that China's position on Japan's discharge of the nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean is consistent that the plan is unjustified and illegal.
"I have noticed some recent international media reports that Japan has exerted inappropriate influence on the conclusion of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) final report on reviewing Japan's nuclear wastewater discharge plan, which increased the world's concern over Japan's discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean," he said.
"The Japanese government has a responsibility to give a credible explanation," he added.
Wang emphasized that China believes that the IAEA should present a review report that can withstand the test of science and history instead of endorsing Japan's discharge plan.
