Qingguo Alley, named after its time as a fresh and dried fruit hub in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), is the best-preserved ancient street in the city of Changzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, featuring many black brick dwellings of the Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

The 400-meter-long, 200-meter-wide area along a river bank was first built in 1581 and is now listed as one of the national cultural and historic blocks of China. It houses celebrities' former residences, temples, museums, stone bridges and memorial archways.

Among them is the Baguitang, literally meaning the house with eight osmanthus trees, built by literatus and strategist Tang Shunzhi in the late Ming Dynasty, occupying almost half the area of Qingguo Alley. The man, versed in both literature and military affairs, planted eight osmanthus trees in his yard, bringing glory and cultural aura to this dwelling that many well-known artists, business people, revolutionists and politicians once stayed in.

Unlike many other cultural blocks filled with various shops and bustling flocks of tourists, Qingguo Alley is calm and has a historic and cultural atmosphere. Walking on the narrow alleys, through grey-tiled houses with white walls, tourists can immerse themselves in memorial halls, museums, art centers and relics, paying tribute to the late celebrities who dedicated themselves to building a prosperous country and promoting cultural development.
