Both Olympic champions, Quan and Chen will go on to compete as individuals in the 10m platform event, with the final scheduled to take place three days later.

"I definitely want to win gold," Chen said after the match. "But I also hope that both of us will be able to go to [the 2024 Olympic Games in] Paris. We will have to be more focused on our daily training," she added.

The Chinese team swept all 13 diving gold medals in last year's World Championships in Budapest.

In artistic swimming, China's Cheng Wentao and Shi Haoyu won the mixed duet technical bronze with 247.3033 points behind Japanese siblings Tomoka Sato and Yotaro Sato and Spain's Emma Garcia and Dennis Gonzalez Boneu.

As male swimmers are allowed to compete in Olympic artistic swimming for the first time next year in Paris, China have geared up the preparation for the Games.

They won a total of four gold medals and two bronzes last year in Budapest, and are registered in seven events in Fukuoka. Both bronze medals were won by Shi and his then partner Zhang Yiyao.

Zhang withdrew due to injury after the preliminary round this time, and was substituted by Cheng. Shi and Cheng in this season have won titles at the Canada leg of the World Cup series as well as the Super Final.
