Giant panda twins Xiao Xiao (male) and Lei Lei (female), were born at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo on June 23, 2021, to mother Shin Shin and her mate Ri Ri, who are also parents to the female panda Xiang Xiang.

Since the start of the year, the zoo has implemented measures to have the twin cubs gradually spend more time away from their mother with the aim of them eventually becoming independent.

They were trained to spend mornings, afternoons and evenings on their own independently, with keepers closely watching them.

By March, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei were successfully living apart from their mother.

Their sister, Xiang Xiang, the zoo's first naturally-conceived panda, has also gained immense popularity among Japanese panda enthusiasts.

The twin cubs have continued this "panda mania" trend with many fans flocking to the zoo even before opening time to celebrate their birthday on June 23, 2023.
