Heilongjiang Youhao National Nature Reserve is located in Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province of northeast China. It is an important wetland in the world. Recently, staff spotted a flock of about 30 oriental storks during a routine patrol of the protected area. This is the first time aggregated oriental storks are spotted in this reserve.
The oriental stork is an endangered species with a rare population. It is listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and under first-class state protection in China. The oriental stork is a solitary bird except during the breeding season. According to Li Xiaomin, an expert on birds at the Northeast Forestry University, the birds aggregate because their babies are in the stage of leaving the nest, therefore adults have to lead them to forage around. Aggregation is a way for the birds to protect each other. Besides, the reason might also be the good environment with abundant food in the reserve's wetland, proving the good protection in the area.
