The mythical bird in the Classic of Mountains and Seas inspires imagination. Its real-world incarnation is said to be the Chinese monal hailed as an "alpine rainbow." The male monal's brightly colored plumage is a combination of pigmentation and sunlight. With each movement, its feathers manifest varied hues like a dazzling scale armor. Only a few thousand Chinese monals exist in the wild. Scientists are working on artificial breeding and conservation of the endangered species.
About Journeys in Nature: Qionglai Mountains Series
Giant pandas were first discovered in the Qionglai Mountains in southwest China's Sichuan Province. More than 500 wild pandas are living in the mountains now. However, there is a lot more there than just pandas. In this series, you will see red pandas, sambar deer and Tibetan macaques. CGTN Nature takes you on a journey to track the pandas deep in the bamboo groves and uncover some interesting stories with the locals.
