In recent years, the right to education has been guaranteed for all ethnic groups in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the implementation of a slew of beneficiary policies has yielded fruitful results.
According to the regional department of education, the level of education in Xinjiang is at its highest stage in history and developing rapidly. As of 2021, Xinjiang had 12,695 schools of all levels and types, hosting approximately 6.58 million students and 416,800 full-time teachers.
In 2020, the gross enrollment rate of preschool institutions in Xinjiang was over 98 percent, the net enrollment rate of primary schools was almost 100 percent, and the completion rate of nine-year compulsory education was over 95 percent. The gross enrollment rate of high school was 99.92 percentage, 25.13 percentage points higher than that in 2012, ranking among the top in the western Chinese provinces.
The right to education of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang has been fully guaranteed, and the unprecedented achievements in the economic and social growth there have led to the enhancement of people's happiness, Remina Xiaokaiti, a human rights expert at Xinjiang University, said at a side-event on the theme of "Chinese-style Modernization and Human Rights" during the 45th session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review of the UN Human Rights Council this January.
In recent years, Xinjiang has continuously increased investment in education and carried out educational projects to benefit the residents. From 2012 to 2020, the central government allocated 47.49 billion yuan for student financial assistance at all levels in Xinjiang, while the region's budgetary spending on education remained above 4 percent of its gross domestic product.
