Muslims across China celebrated Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday, which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast for 29 to 30 days.
China's 10 Muslim-majority ethnic groups comprise over 25 million people, making up 20 percent of the country's 55 ethnic minorities. Uygur and Hui are the largest Muslim-majority ethnic groups.
Muslims reside throughout China, with significant concentrations in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Xinjiang boasts a diverse Muslim population, including Uygur, Hui, Kazak, Dongxiang, Kirgiz, Tajik, Uzbek and Tatar communities. In Ningxia, the Hui people make up 35 percent of the population, totaling more than 2.5 million people, according to the seventh national census in 2020.
