Blue alert: sandstorms sweep northern China

China's National Meteorological Center renewed a blue alert for sandstorms in some parts of north China for Sunday and Monday.

Widespread sandstorms choked multiple cities in northern China on Saturday afternoon, stirring dusty air and impairing visibility.

Surveillance footage at the Mandula port in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region captured a huge wall of dust moving across the landscape, turning the sky orange.

Severe storms have reduced visibility to less than 500 meters, impeding clearance at the port. In response, staff members at the local border inspection station launched an emergency response plan to ensure smooth clearance.

Sandstorms descended on many cities in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region at around 18:00 on Saturday, filling the air with dust and reducing visibility to less than 1,000 meters.

In the past two decades, China has increased its efforts to prevent and control desertification, with the participation of all sectors. The desertified and sandy areas have continued to reduce. Statistics show that as of April 15, there has been one less sand or dust storm day than the average for the same period since 2000, and three fewer than in 2023. The Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program has also played a positive role in preventing and controlling sandy and dusty weather.

China has a three-tier color-coded weather warning system for severe convection weather and sandstorms, with orange representing the most severe warning, followed by yellow and blue.
