Chinese Premier Li Qiang is paying official visits to New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia from June 13 to 20.
Australia is Li's second leg of his three-nation tour, aiming to reinforce the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Australia, and explore new avenues for cooperation, ensuring that both nations continue to benefit from their strong and complementary economic relationship.
Economic and trade cooperation between China and Australia is a cornerstone of the bilateral ties. According to the General Administration of Customs, total bilateral trade values in 2023 reached $229 billion. China has been Australia's largest trading partner, export market and import source for 15 consecutive years since 2009.
China is an important source market for Australia's tourism industry and investment, said Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian at the 2024 Australia-China Economic Cooperation Forum. Last year, Australia received more than 550,000 Chinese tourists. By the end of 2023, China's total investment in Australia was $58.5 billion, of which the stock of direct investment in Australia was $30.94 billion, making China Australia's fifth largest source of direct investment.
