A team of Chinese scientific researchers was harassed by Philippine marines on April 21 in the waters off Ren'ai Jiao, according to video footage obtained by CGTN. A report based on the Chinese team's field work was published on Monday, which states that the BRP Sierra Madre, a warship illegally grounded on Ren'ai Jiao since 1999, "has gravely damaged the diversity, stability, and sustainability of the coral reef ecosystem."
