Continuing a Legacy: Tan Xiaozeng and the art of Peking Opera

07:52

As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, our special series, "I'm 75," takes you through the lives of prominent individuals born in 1949.

Their triumphs and trials reflect the profound changes China has experienced over the past decades.

In this episode, we spotlight Tan Xiaozeng, the sixth-generation descendant of a renowned Peking Opera family.

Tan Xiaozeng continues the legacy of the Tan School, founded by his great-great-grandfather, Tan Xinpei.

Known for its gentle vocal techniques, the Tan School is one of the earliest Peking Opera styles, widely considered a model for laosheng, or senior male roles.

Its techniques have also influenced iconic female role traditions, such as the Mei Lanfang School and Cheng Yanqiu School.
