The U.S. unilateral imposition of additional tariffs seriously violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and will disrupt normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) said on Sunday.
Noting that the U.S. has decided to impose an additional 10-percent tariff on goods imported from China, citing issues such as fentanyl, a CCPIT spokesperson stated that the Chinese business community deeply regrets and firmly opposes this move.
The spokesperson emphasized that many American businesses and consumers will bear the cost of this decision, which will also undermine the stability of global industrial and supply chains.
"There is no winner in trade and tariff wars," the spokesperson said, adding that the U.S.'s approach is not conducive to resolving its own issues, improving China-U.S. relations, or supporting global economic development.
"We strongly urge the U.S. side to correct its wrongdoing immediately, meet China halfway, and enhance cooperation with various countries to create a sound international environment for mutual benefit and win-win results for the two countries and the global business community, and inject more stability and positive energy into global economic growth," the spokesperson added.
