The short film "Whispers of Masters: A Night at Shaolin" features several locations within the Shaolin Temple that may pique viewers' curiosity. This brief overview provides some historical context for the Sutra-keeping Pavilion and the Guanyin Hall.
The Sutra-keeping Pavilion
The short film opens with the main character sweeping the area in front of the Sutra-keeping Pavilion.
The Sutra-keeping Pavilion, a site where eminent monks have historically disseminated Buddhism, serves as a repository for classic Buddhist scriptures. It houses a vast collection of thousands of sacred texts, including the Zhonghua Dazangjing (Tripitaka Sinica), Qianlong Dazangjing (Dragon Canon), Dazhengzang (Taisho Canon), Gaolizang (Korean Canon), and many others.
According to historical records, the original pavilion was built during the Zhizheng period of the Yuan Dynasty (1341-1368). The current pavilion, based on available description in historical documents, was meticulously redesigned and rebuilt on the same site between 1992 and 1993.
The Guanyin Hall
When the main character struggles to make a breakthrough in his martial arts training, the old monk advises him to seek inspiration in the Guanyin Hall.
The Guanyin Hall was constructed during the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Its interior features a statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva and is adorned with historically and culturally significant murals on the east, south and north walls.
The north wall mural depicts the legendary tale of the thirteen Shaolin monks rescuing the Tang Emperor – the very story that inspired the renowned 1982 film "Shaolin Temple." In the short film "Whispers of Masters: A Night at Shaolin," the main character sits before another mural depicting ancient monks engaged in martial arts duels with various weapons, as he seeks his own breakthrough.
