Robots on the runway: Humanoid stuns Shanghai Fashion Week

In a groundbreaking fusion of fashion and technology, Unitree Robotics' humanoid robot G1 and its robotic dog companion strutted onto the runway during Shanghai Fashion Week on Wednesday.

The showcase, presented by avant-garde label NMTG, delivered a performance that was less traditional catwalk and more immersive behavioral art.

The moment came after the models had completed their walk. A robotic dog suddenly flipped mid-stage, revealing a custom outfit. Then, the G1 humanoid robot sprang to life, interacting with a blue-clad model who shook its hand and adorned it with a 3D-printed necklace shaped like a deer – a symbol of harmony and hope.

The show's creative director, Xu Shangxi, drew inspiration from Unitree's viral Chinese New Year performance, where the G1 dazzled audiences with traditional dance moves. 

"I wanted to explore the symbiosis of nature, humanity and technology," Xu said.

The event, a tripartite collaboration between Unitree, NMTG and Shanghai Fashion Week, broke the boundaries between tech and culture. As Xu put it, "This isn't just a show; it's a manifesto for the future."

The Unitree G1 is an advanced humanoid robot developed by China's Unitree Robotics, showcasing remarkable agility and precision. It features AI-driven, full-body motion control, enabling dynamic movements, such as dancing, spinning handkerchiefs and performing coordinated routines with human-like dexterity.
