Beijing introduces new pollen tech, experts advise protection

CGTN

Beijing has introduced new technology to curb spring pollen, with a research team developing an organic juniper pollen fixative that helps pollen settle faster. Tests show it increases pollen deposition by 17 to 20 times compared with traditional water spraying, reducing airborne allergen levels.

Experts note that pollen allergies are caused by immune system imbalance rather than a weakened immune system. Cases have increased and are affecting younger age groups, while climate warming, lack of sleep and stress may trigger or worsen symptoms. Without proper treatment, the condition can progress and even develop into asthma. Although there is no cure, avoiding allergens, appropriate medication use and allergen immunotherapy can help control symptoms and reduce risks.

Ouyang Yuhui, chief physician of the Allergy Department at Beijing Tongren Hospital, outlined four protective measures for peak pollen seasons. First, limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., when pollen levels are highest. Second, keep windows closed during high-pollen periods and regularly clean indoor surfaces. Third, change clothes, wash hands and clean exposed areas such as the eyes and nose after returning home. Fourth, people prone to allergies should consult doctors in advance and use anti-allergy medication as directed.
