Traditional iron factory gains new life in Inner Mongolia

The iron and steel industry used to be the pillar of the economy in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's city of Baotou. Abundant resources made it one of China’s largest industrial bases.
Founded in 1954, Baogang Group was one of China’s earliest steel production bases and has remained a leading innovator since then. The fast development of China’s high-speed railway has brought new opportunities to the group which has produced steel for railways connecting Beijing and Shanghai, as well as on the Tibetan Plateau.
Rare earth is a unique local specialty that gives more tenacity to Baogang's products. Its rail steel meets the requirements of high-speed railways used for trains traveling at 350 kilometers per hour.
Standards on environmental protection have also been upgraded. One of Baogang’s facilities is worth 1.6 billion yuan and can collect most sulfur, fluorine and dust that the factory generates.
At present, Baogang Group is carrying out the life-cycle assessment to assess the environmental impact of its products. Each production link is included to achieve the target of low carbon emission.
