Panama reaffirms commitment to One China principle

Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela on Saturday to discuss relations and cooperation between the two countries.
President Varela reiterated Panama’s commitment to the One China principle, saying his country will not do anything against the principle or anything that will undermine mutual political trust.
The president, who will visit China this year, has also expressed his support for the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Panama is willing to take an active part in the building of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, said Varela.
For his part, Wang said that the facts have proven that the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Panama is the right strategic choice.
"The One China principle is the prerequisite and political basis for the bilateral ties," added Wang.
The Chinese Foreign Minister arrived in Panama City on Saturday for his first official visit. He will attend the inauguration ceremony of China’s embassy following the establishment of diplomatic relations earlier this summer.
