We Are Friends – episode one: 'I'm a doctor in China'

Relations between China and Africa are developing fast, and their close cooperation is bridging their geographical and cultural gaps.

Thanks to deepening ties between the two sides, more Africans are flocking to Chinese cities such as Guangzhou and Beijing, in search for work opportunities and a better life.

CGTN is sharing the personal stories of three Africans who call China home.

In the first episode of "We Are Friends," Gavin Sunnassee from Mauritius talks about what it's like to be an African doctor in China. He is pursuing neurology at the Southern Medical University and works at a local hospital.

Gavin says some patients "feel a little strange" upon seeing a foreign doctor but they gradually open up after getting to know him. He came to China in 2006, interested in learning Chinese Mandarin, which he now speaks fluently.

Gavin lives with his wife and their daughter but plans on returning to Mauritius after graduation, taking with him a baggage of know-how and skills to help his country prosper, the way China did.
