Taiwan should see clearly the trends and make a wise choice, a spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said on Tuesday after Panama cut so-called "diplomatic" ties with Taiwan.
In a statement, spokesman Ma Xiaoguang said the establishment reflects the trend of the times and meets the expectations of the people on both sides. He said the "One China" policy is a general consensus in the international community and the "1992 Consensus" is the key to peaceful and stable development of the cross-Strait relations.
"Only by accepting 'the 1992 Consensus' and recognizing its core concept of one China can the cross-Strait relations be brought back on the right direction," he said.
The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Panama signed a communique Tuesday on the establishment of diplomatic relations. The establishment was made as the Central American country severed its so-called "diplomatic" ties with Taiwan. In a statement, the Panamanian government said it recognized that "there is only one China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China."
